We all just got a bunch of new Instagram followers (but it’s not going to last, booooooo)

I looked down at my phone yesterday and saw I had gained, like, a dozen followers on Instagram seemingly within the span of seconds. I didn’t think much of it, chalking the uptick up to a bunch of Facebook friends all joining Instagram at the same time and following the prompt to add me. Or maybe my phone was just being weird, and had previously been slacking on updating my profile count. Technology, you mysterious creature you, I yearn to understand your ways.

As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one who received an influx of mystery followers. Most people got a boost in followers yesterday, some reported seeing as many as 100,000 new followers show up on their profiles (I would LOVE to see that before/after screen cap).

So what gives? How come we’re all so popular on Insta now?

Well, there is an explanation, but unfortunately it’s not the one we wanted (FYI, the explanation we WANTED was “Everyone all of a sudden realized how amaze your #TBTs and #OOTDs are and never wanted to miss a shot again”). As TechCrunch reports, Instagram confirmed that there is a bug that falsely inflated follower counts, the bug is being fixed now, and soon all our profiles will go back to normal (Boooooooo).

We have that Cinderella-at-the-ball-at-11:59 feeling. Soon, our social media ball gown will turn back into rags (or maybe not RAGS, but a less-nice dress, for sure) Ah, well. It was a lovely dream while it lasted.
