This new hashtag is telling Trump an important truth: #PeriodsAreNotAnInsult
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is . . . well, certainly one to speak his mind. And about 99% of the time, it gets him in hot water (for instance, being disinvited to Saturday’s RedState Gathering, an event featuring conservative activists).
By now, you’ve probably heard the unbelievably sexist comment trump made about Megyn Kelly after the first Republican presidential debate last Thursday. “[Kelly] gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions,” Trump said in a CNN interview. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. In my opinion, she was off base.”
Blood coming out of her wherever? Trump tweeted on Saturday that he was referring to Kelly’s nose, and his campaign released a statement that he said “whatever” rather than “wherever,” but semantics aside, it was an absolutely inappropriate joke that came off as misogynistic, hateful, and entirely demeaning. And that’s why we’re totally in love with #PeriodsAreNotAnInsult, a social media movement sprung from this episode, that aims to highlight the fact that periods are never something to joke about or to use as a personal attack.
Started by Femsplain founder Amber Gordon (pictured below) as a brilliantly tongue-in-cheek response to Trump’s comments about Kelly, “Periods Are Not An Insult” is now a website that allows you to tweet about your period to Trump.
“I was reading the news while laying in bed unable to move because of my own period when I came across Trump’s remarks towards Megyn Kelly,” Gordon told HelloGiggles. “I was so annoyed that ‘periods’ — something people who get them each month have zero control over — are still being used as an insult. So I went on Twitter to voice my frustration and found some joy in tweeting at him I was on my period.”
And I thought, everyone should be able to do this,” Gordon told HG. “So, I pulled out my laptop and thought of a website name and spent my Saturday afternoon coding the page while listening to “Red” by Cher.” Emblazoned with a fabulously red sparkly header, the website allows you to choose from several different options to let the candidate know that you’re on your period, you’re getting it soon, or you don’t get a period but still don’t think it should be used as an insult. All of the tweets feature the hashtag #periodsarenotaninsult with five red emojis so you can let Trump know what’s going on with your flow.
People are also deviating from the default tweets the website provides to send their own clever quips to Trump.
There’s also a section of the site that allows you to share any personal stories you may have about someone using “having your period” as an insult; the website will be featuring the stories at a later date. Gordon tells us she’s not sure what she’ll be doing with the website next, but she’s “hopeful” about getting submissions.
Since the debut of Gordon’s website on Saturday night, the fabulously feminist social media campaign has only exploded with popularity, with hundreds taking to Twitter to let Trump know that his comments are sexist, misogynist, and 100% not OK.
“The Internet never ceases to amaze me,” Gordon told HG. “I really believe it’s important for people who get periods to feel comfortable talking about them and not be ashamed. I hope this can help.”
We love seeing people band together to fight this ridiculous misogyny. Oh, and by the way, Mr. Trump, I’m on my period right now.
