Why this ‘Harry Potter’ director wants to make a new movie about Harry, Ron, and Hermione
Even though the Harry Potter books (and movies) are over and done with, there are still Harry Potter stories out there to be told. For instance, we’re getting the marvelous HP prequel spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which will one day become a trilogy of movies. Amazing, right? Well, if the OG Harry Potter director, Chris Columbus, has his way, we’ll be getting way more movies than just these future three. He wants to return back to the original trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and check-in with them — and we are so on board with this.
Columbus, who directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone along with Chamber of Secrets, stopped by Entertainment Weekly Radio this morning, to talk about his new film, Pixels. But, when you get the original Harry Potter director in the studio, you’re of course going to bring up The Boy Who Lived —that’s just how it goes. That’s when Columbus dropped the most amazing tease on us: he wants to direct more movies, and already has a little bit of an idea in mind:
HE’S RIGHT. The end of Deathly Hollows presses the fast forward button, and jumps into the future: we see Harry bring his family to Platform 9 3/4 and it’s wonderfully emotional. But what happened in-between all of this? Harry and Ginny get married. Ron and Hermione get married, too. Neville returns to Hogwarts to teach Herbology. Draco continues to be, uh, moody. Do you realize how many Galleons we’d fork over to see a movie exploring these stories? SO MANY.
While this is, yes, the best idea ever, Columbus hasn’t mentioned this to Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, herself. He’s too nervous.
“I don’t have the courage to actually mention that to her because I have such respect for her,” he says. “She should do what she wants to do, but I really would love to know what’s in her head about those missing years.”
You just know Rowling (probably) has those missing years mapped out. She has everything mapped out. She can rattle off all sorts of obscure Harry Potter trivia because she knows it backwards and forwards. While she’s probably very busy right now helping out with Fantastic Beasts — and not to mention, the Harry Potter stage show, Cursed Child, too — maybe she could find the time to write a few more HP-centric features as well. If you need us to ask her for you, Chris, we will. We want this as much as you do.
