This new Dalí exhibit celebrates the long-term relationship between fashion and art
Fashion and art have always had quite the relationship, but there’s one specific collaboration between the two that has withstood the test of time. Let’s just say that if surrealist Salvador Dalí and fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli were around today, they’d be the greatest social media sensation. The duo shifted how we imagine the interaction between fashion and art. And now, over 80 years since the first time they collaborated, we’re getting an exhibit to commemorate the artists’ legacies.
The latest exhibit honoring the two is “Dalí & Schiaparelli, In Daring Fashion,” which aims to immortalize the merging of style and art in one of the most influential partnerships of the 20th century.
The exhibit — which is located at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida — features work like Schiaparelli’s famous “lobster dress” and “shoe hat,” both of which were created in collaboration with Dalí.

Dalí and Schiaparelli worked together on many projects. Dalí designed Schiaparelli’s perfume bottle, and she interpreted his paintings into dresses (like the 1938 “tears dress” and “skeleton dress”).
Surrealism, which lies at the heart of both Schiaparelli and Dalí’s work, is a lens through which one can view the world.
It asks the viewer to believe the unbelievable. It rewrites the script on what constitutes normal and disrupts the idea of convention. Both Dalí and Schiaparelli wanted us to look at things differently, whether through art or clothing. And this same idea has inspired countless other artistic collaborations, too.

Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons, Raf Simons and Robert Mapplethorpe, Gucci and Gucci Ghost — the fashion and art worlds are now deeply interconnected. And we can, in part, thank the iconic work of both Schiaparelli and Dalí for that.

In an interview with Vogue Runway, The Dalí Museum’s director, Hank Hine, talks about the impact the two continue to have. He says,
“The ideas of going beyond [reality] are even more vital today. Being able to laugh at the ironies of the world, and try to create something new, and try to be uplifting. It’s important. But I’m struck by the kind of blandness of things in fashion today.
If there’s one thing both these artists weren’t: bland. But don’t take it from us. See it for yourself at “Dalí & Schiaparelli, In Daring Fashion,” which is on display from October 18th, 2017 to January 14th, 2018 at The Dalí Museum.
