We’ve got news! There’s a new series in the ‘Serial’ podcast saga coming.
Serial fans, listen up! A new podcast about Adnan Syed’s trial and the murder of Hae Min Lee is launching on Monday, April 13. Although not officially linked with Serial, this new podcast does sound mighty interesting. It’s called Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed and it claims to have more information about the case as well as a plan to dive into bigger topics like, “what was going on in the community at the time, what Adnan was going through and what the lawyers’ own perspective was at the time.” We are already biting our nails in anticipation.
For those of you who didn’t tune in to Serial, Adnan Syed is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The two were students at the same Baltimore high school, and had gone through a breakup shortly before Lee was murdered. But Syed, who was found guilty, has always maintained his innocence and claims his defense was inadequate. Serial made the inconsistencies in the case a topic of national discussion, and Syed has succeeded in getting an appeal for the first time in 12 years. As for the podcast: Serial was downloaded more than 76 million times, it was basically the first viral podcast, and it has the potential to change Syed’s life.
Undisclosed is the work of lawyers Rabia Chaudry, Susan Simpson, and Colin Miller. Chaudry was featured in the premiere Serial podcast, so her name may be familiar. Their podcast is being funded through the Adnan Syed Legal Defense Fund, a trust set up by Chaudry and colleague Dennis Robinson to help Syed.
Chaudry explained some of the nitty gritty behind the new podcast to PBS’ News Hour: “Susan and Colin have been taking a closer look, and with their own private investigator, continuing the investigation.” She continued, “There are serious questions about the process, about the criminal justice system, about how prosecutors conduct themselves, and all of these things should be looked at.”
The new podcast centers around “new evidence and information,” taking “an investigatory perspective instead of a narrative one.” They also hope to right some of Serial’s wrongs. Chaudry has been involved with Syed’s defense for a long time, and we’re excited to get her and her colleague’s take on the case. Whether it will make the case more clear, of course, remains to be seen.
The first episode of Undisclosed: The State v Adnan Syed will launch on April 13. Episodes will be half an hour and they have not yet determined for how long the podcast will run. For more information, visit the podcast’s website here.
