Netflix has just suspended production on the final season of “House of Cards” — possibly forever

It has been quite the 24 hours for Netflix’s House of Cards, and not in a good way. Less than a day after the announcement that the show would be ending following its upcoming sixth season, the streaming site has decided to suspend production — and suspend it indefinitely.

This comes on the heels of BuzzFeed News’ report on Sunday, in which actor Anthony Rapp accused House of Cards star Kevin Spacey of making sexual advances toward him when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. Spacey issued an apology shortly after the news broke, but instead of really apologizing to Rapp (Spacey claims not to remember the incident), he instead tried to turn the conversation in his favor, and in the process came out as gay. His response was almost immediately slammed by the LGBTQ community for being a deflection, insensitive, and in the words of Zachary Quinto, a “manipulation.”

On Monday, Netflix announced that the House of Cards season currently filming would be its last. It’s unclear if the show was always supposed to end after Season 6, or in light of allegations, Netflix decided to pull the plug early. Not only that, yesterday Netflix also announced that they were thinking about a spinoff series, maybe based around long-time cast member Doug Stamper. Still, unclear if this was always intentional, or due to the current Spacey allegations.

AND NOW, if that’s not enough to keep up with, Netflix has completely suspended production on the series. In a statement to Deadline, Netflix announced:

“Media Rights Capital and Netflix have decided to suspend production on House of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew."

Netflix and MRC (the production company behind House of Cards) flew to the set of the show Monday to, “to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported.” They also explained that Spacey was not on set, because he was not scheduled to shoot yesterday.

Now, no one is shooting, at least for the time being. Production could resume as early as tomorrow, next week, or in a month — it’s currently listed as indefinitely, so it could resume any time. Or possibly even never again. This could be the end of Netflix’s first prestigious show.
