All “Star Wars” and Marvel movies are leaving Netflix — but don’t worry, we’re not doomed
As we’re reminded every single month, Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. But this time, the latest exodus from the streaming site isn’t because it’s that time of the month. It’s because Disney is pulling titles from Netflix.
Come 2019, there will be no more Disney movies on the site, which is bummer news for all of us — so you better enjoy streaming Mulan while you can. While Disney entered into a streaming partnership with Netflix not that long ago, that beautiful relationship is no more. Last month, Disney made the hella upsetting announcement that their movies would be leaving, and at the time, it wasn’t clear if it would *just* be Disney titles, or if Marvel and Star Wars movies would be vacating, too.
Welp, now it’s clear: Marvel and Star Wars movies are leaving Netflix, so keep on enjoying Captain America: Civil War and Rogue One while you can. With everything else from the Mouse House departing, these two mega franchises will as well.
But! All is not lost! Don’t forget, the only reason they’re leaving is because Disney is starting their own streaming service, which is expected to be ad-free, and honestly just take my money now.
Earlier today, Bob Iger, the CEO of the Walt Disney Company, told investors that the streaming service is, “going to launch big, and…going to launch hot” and it’s expected to be up and running by 2019. That’s certainly good news, and it’s not like we’ll be unable to stream Disney movies for a prolonged amount of time. However, throughout 2018, be prepared for Disney movies to start disappearing from Netflix (and also, Hulu and Amazon Prime) as they get ready to make the jump to Disney’s own platform. This feels like a lose-lose, but it’s really a win-WIN.
While we’ll always remember the good times watching and rewatching Pocahontas at 2 a.m. because we felt like it and we COULD, Disney’s own streaming service only means good things for us. There is much streaming to be had in our future.
