Netflix is creating new shows based on Roald Dahl books, because sometimes we can have nice things

As pretty much any childhood bookworm will tell you, Roald Dahl’s books are some of the most magical ever. From the brilliant Matildato Charlie’s fantastical adventures with Willy Wonka, to James and that giant peach, the stories Dahl wrote are unforgettable—even for adults. And now, thanks to the wizards at Netflix, Dahl’s literary world is coming to the small screen.

In a November 27th press release, Netflix announced that it has partnered with the Roald Dahl Story Company to create several original animated series based on Dahl’s books, including The BFG, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Twits. The streaming service stated that it wants to “remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl” while expanding the stories into their own universe. In other words, the various series Netflix will create won’t be direct adaptations of Dahl’s work.

"Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories," Dahl's widow, Felicity Dahl, said in a statement to Netflix. "This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled."

Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids & Family Content at Netflix, told Variety that some of the shows might even overlap. “There will be threads that connect all of them,” she said. “We want to do the animation in the style of Dahl.”

In a statement for the Netflix release, Cobb said that the company was "grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world."

Netflix is set to begin production on the Dahl series in 2019. We’re just excited to see some of our childhood favorites come to life.
