Netflix *knows* you’re binging in public — but don’t worry, half the population is, too
Towards the end of last year, Netflix released a download feature, which allowed users to download select titles onto their tablets or mobile devices to watch, without having to worry about draining the data plan.
But according to a new survey from Netflix, we’ve not only embraced the download feature — it’s become an important part of our daily lives.
“Netflixing In Public has become a social norm with 60% of Americans watching more movies and shows in public this year than last, said Eddy Wu, Director, Production Innovation Netflix, in a statement. “The introduction of the Netflix download feature has given users the freedom to watch their favorite movies and shows wherever they want, like during their commute or waiting in line, and for some... that means at work or even in a public restroom.
Yes, we actually use the streaming site that aggressively but I mean, we do have 10 Seasons of Friends to rewatch for the umpteenth time.
With holiday travel right around the corner, Netflix in public is about to hit its peak. The study revealed that many Netflix users watch during their commutes, with 44% watching while on a plane and one in five users watching during a bus ride. But travelers aren’t the only ones bingeing in public, with 40% of users watching their favorite Netflix titles during their daily commutes.
But while it seems that public binges may be making us more antisocial, it’s actually doing the opposite. The study revealed that 44% of people watching Netflix in public have seen other snooping over their shoulders, trying to get in on the action. Further, 35% of public bingers have actually had their show interrupted by a fellow traveler, looking to converse about said binge.
So if you ever felt a *little* guilty about bingeing on the go, you’re not only in great company, you may even make a friend in the process.
