Whoa, this new Netflix movie “The Discovery” starring Rooney Mara and Jason Segel looks trippy
As if we aren’t still reeling from the insanity that was season one of The OA, Netflix just released a trailer for a seemingly equally mind-bending and bananas movie called The Discovery. The sci-fi film, which stars Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, and Robert Redford, also deals with the concept of the afterlife like The OA, but that seems to be where the similarities end. It looks insane, and we can’t wait to see it. But, before we go any further, let’s talk about the trailer.
Everything seems okay at first. Rooney and Jason are hanging out, smiling. They seem to be in love. An upbeat, but somewhat sad, song is playing (“Only the Lonely” by Roy Orbison).
They go to some big beautiful house with Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo, etc).
Robert Redford is there, chilling in a lab.
Then, things start to get a bit strange. The music slows down and takes on a new tone — a far eerier one. There seems to be some sort of creepy, cult-like meeting happening.
Rooney Mara emerges from the ocean wearing a backpack backwards. K.
A couple of people are hooked up to various machines. K.
Segel and Mara unload what looks like to be a dead body. K. Let me also note that there has been zero dialogue thus far.
Then, we watch a man kill himself. Won’t screenshot that. After, Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience, Magic Mike, etc) comes out of nowhere holding a gun. She’s pointing it at Robert Redford.
At the very end, Jason Segel says the only line of dialogue from the entire trailer. “People are just going to keep killing themselves.”
WTF IS HAPPENING. WE’RE SO CONFUSED. BUT WE NEED TO SEE MORE.
From the Hollywood Reporter, this is what’s going on:
The film is set one year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified. Redford plays the scientist responsible for the discovery, while Segel portrays his son Will and Mara plays Isla, a woman haunted by a tragic past who Will begins to fall in love with.
Let’s be real, though. We’ll watch just about anything with Rooney Mara and Jason Segel.

Per Variety, Netflix will release The Discovery on March 31st. That’s enough time to recalibrate our brains from The OA, right? We def can’t miss this one.
