Today in awesome: Netflix is rolling out new Marvel series faster than we even expected
Marvel fans, clear your Netflix queues, and prepare to start racking up superhero series like there’s no tomorrow.
At the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, Netflix officially dropped some big news: The streaming service is going to be rolling out a new Marvel series EVERY SIX MONTHS.
Daredevil, which premiered back in April and has quickly shot to the top as Netflix’s highest-rated original series, is just the first of several shows which will showcase a group known as the Defenders, which includes Daredevil as well as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist — each of whom will be getting their own show before joining together in the ultimate crossover miniseries.
Until yesterday, news about the release date for Jessica Jones was still up in the air – but per Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos, we’ve finally learned that it will be debuting on Netflix before the end of 2015. Starring Krysten Ritter as the former superhero trying to restart her life as a private investigator, everything we’ve seen so far (like awesome new set photos!) are only making us more and more excited for the season to premiere.
As for how JJ will compare to Daredevil, they’re going to be majorly different.
“The mythology of the universe is connected, but they look very different. Tonally, they’re very different,” Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg stated, according to The Hollywood Reporter.”They’re wildly different.”
According to Sarandos, we’ll also be getting each addition to the Defenders Netflix series about every six months or so — just enough time for us to recover from the previous season before a new one starts. Once all four shows have debuted on Netflix, there will be the premiere of a short miniseries involving all four characters. However, Sarandos added that some of these standalone shows will likely have more seasons than others — which is probably contingent on just how these other shows go over with the Netflix crowd.
A six-month turnaround is actually pretty impressive, since, per The Mary Sue, the original news was that each show was going to premiere within eight to fifteen months of one another. Given how popular Daredevil was right out of the gate, it’s no surprise that Netflix is kicking things into a high gear.
As for whether Daredevils‘ The Punisher will get his own show, Sarandos isn’t ruling anything out. He even hinted at possible movie spin-offs of future series.
