The August Netflix updates — because you need them
As July draws to a close, it’s time to start looking ahead to August. Namely, what new things you’re going to be able to binge on Netflix come the sultriest of summer months. And for this last month of summer, the updated Netflix options do not disappoint. Not only are there are a bunch of awesome movies coming to the streaming site, there are also a ton of television seasons, too. Is there such a thing as back-to-school binging? There should be. FYI, there are a lot of things leaving Netflix August 1st as well (Titanic! SOB!), but that’s a sad list for another time. You can find it here.
Back to the happy news which, we repeat, means so many good new things coming to our S.O. Netflix. Our advice? Skip the beach for one weekend and stay inside with some AC and these brand new stream-able gems. They start dropping onto the site as early as Saturday.
Reading Rainbow: Volume 1, August 1st
Remember when old episodes of Bill Nye the Science Guy suddenly appeared on Netflix? At least we’re getting a warning for Reading Rainbow ahead of time. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what episodes will be a part of its Volume 1 collection, but hopefully we’re in for a bunch of old school (literally) episodes from the 1980s.
The Hurt Locker, August 1st
The Hurt Locker is an amazing movie, and snagged the Best Picture award at the Oscars. Know what else it won? Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, who became the first woman in the history of the Oscars to claim that top prize.
Welcome to Me, August 6th
Kristen Wiig should star in more moves. That is a fact. For right now, we’ll happily take Welcome To Me. It’s about a woman who wins the lottery, and then buys her own talk show, so she can do, and talk, about whatever she wants. If that’s not enough to lure you in, Linda Cardellini plays her best friend.
HitRECord on TV: Season 1, August 7th
Our guy Joseph Gordon-Levitt has his own show on Pivot, and now we’ll be able to watch it all on Netflix. The first season of his HitRECord, all eight episodes of it, will soon be at your fingertips. That includes episodes like RE: FANTASY and RE: SPACE.
Doctor Who: Season 8, August 8th
There are already 104 episodes of Doctor Who on Netflix. With the addition of Season 8, that brings the total up to 116. Can you handle that? These new episodes are in fact the newest ones to date. Come along with the Twelfth Doctor and his companion, Clara. You’ve gotta watch fast, though, because both The Doctor and Clara will be back for Season 9 in September.
Leap Year, August 12th
You can only watch 13 Going On 30 so many times, you know? So when you’re ready for a new movie, check out Leap Year. It stars Amy Adams in all her rom-com glory, as a woman who decides to propose to her boyfriend, on Leap Year (GET IT?) and things go amiss.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, August 16th
How about changing things up with a little indie dramedy? Basically, it’s the end of the Earth, everyone’s freaking out, so Steve Carell and Keira Knightley decide to take one last adventure together, to find Carell’s childhood love and Knightly’s family.
Girl Meets World: Season 1, August 23rd
While all eight seasons of Boy Meets World might not be on Netflix (hey, can we get those?) you can at least indulge in the BMW feels with Girl Meets World. We will go wherever Cory and Topanga go, and that includes into adulthood with a smart and sassy young teenager named Riley — and her trouble-making BFF, Maya. Sound familiar?
Narcos: Season 1, August 28th
If you’re in the mood for a brand new Netflix Original series, Narcos might be the one to check out. It’s got a “based on a true story” tagline, and will follow the rise of the Medellin Cartel (but not Vincent Chase’s Medellin). Game of Throne’s Pedro Pascal is in this one, so yeah, we’ll binge it.
Once Upon a Time: Season 4, August 28th
Yes, Season 4 of Once Upon A Time is the season that Frozen came to Storybrooke. Yes, Anna and Elsa came along, and yes they also brought Kristoff, and yes he was played by one of our forever-crushes, Scott Michael Foster (AKA, Cappie from Greek). This season also brought about a ton of spells and curses (duh), the return of the Wicked Witch, and three brand new villains — Maleficent, Cruella, and Ursula.
