Netflix wants to release 80 — YES, 80 — films in 2018

We already know that Netflix is home to some of the most bingeable shows on the internet. Thanks to the streaming platform, we can watch anything from old faves like Friends and The West Wing to killer original series like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black at literally any moment in time.

But now, Netflix is looking to up its original film game in a really big way, so start preparing those queues!

Since 2013, when the streaming platform launched House of Cards, it has primarily been known for its original series. But it looks like Netflix is trying to change that, as it plans to release a whopping 80 original films in 2018. It’s clear that the streaming platform is going all in.

The announcement came at a recent investors meeting, where Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, CEO Reid Hastings, and CFO David Wells opened up about the future of the streaming platform. With two big-budget films set for release over the next two years — Bright, a sci-fi cop drama starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton will hit the platform in December, and the Martin Scorsese-directed The Irishman starring Robert De Niro will arrive in early 2019 — the streaming platform is looking to expand its catalogue.

While Netflix may be looking to broaden its horizons with big-budget films, the company’s not leaving its indie roots behind.

Sarandos told investors that the streaming platform is looking to release original films ranging from low-budget Sundance favorites to big-budget films like Bright. And frankly, this announcement shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as last year, Wells admitted that Netflix was looking to expand original content to the point where half its catalogue is made up of original films and shows. Still, 80 is an incredibly daunting number.

But hey, that means we’ll have so many new movies at our fingertips…in case we ever don’t feel like watching Zootopia.
