Awesome Wedding Alert: Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are Married

Congratulations are in order! On Saturday, Neil Patrick Harris married his longtime fiancé David Burtka in Italy. The two began dating in 2004, and in 2011, Harris publicly announced their engagement in the wake of the passage of New York’s Marriage Equality Act.

The couple were wedded by How I Met Your Mother producer and director Pam Fryman, and wore custom Tom Ford tuxedos. Afterwards, legendary singer Elton John performed at the reception. Got that? Elton John was the band.

Harris shared the awesome news with the world via Twitter (but of course). Here’s his sweet announcement.

Within hours, about 40,000 people retweeted the message and over 80,000 folks favorited it.

Last year, Harris, who has twins with Burtka, spoke of his impending nuptials in an interview with E! News, saying, “Certainly, we have children and marriage is an appropriate thing to do [as] a part of their well being, so I’m sure it will be inevitable—and awesome!”

And it was.

“It was a beautiful family affair in Perugia, Italy,” said Kelly Ripa, who was a guest at the wedding, According to Ripa, Harris and Burtka’s twins Gideon and Harper, who turn four next month, played a significant role in the event.

“Harper was going to be the flower girl and Gideon was going to be the ring bearer,” she said. But Gideon decided he wanted to be an “orange bearer” instead, because this kid’s a genius. So that’s just what he did. In a tux and top hat, “he passed out oranges to everybody as he came down the aisle,” says Ripa. Did we mention, there was also magic tricks at the reception, because NPH really loves his magic?

Yes, this wedding was indeed awesome.
