NBC officially canceled a fan-favorite TV show, and we object
With all of the excellent television shows on air right now, it’s natural (but depressing) that some will get canceled in their prime. And today, we’re lamenting the loss of yet another series canceled too soon. Entertainment Weekly reports that NBC has officially canceled the true-crime documentary spoof Trial & Error.
Deadline notes that the network chose not to renew the series for Season 3 in August 2018. Since then, Warner Bros. Television, which produced the show, has been reportedly trying to find it a new home—to no avail. However, in a statement to Deadline, WBTV said that it was “open to an opportunity to continue the series, should one arise in the future,” so we’re holding out hope for a Netflix reboot.
Trial & Error told the often wacky story of a lawyer (Nicholas D’Agosto) who moves from New York City to small-town South Carolina, chronicling different cases in a spoof of true-crime documentaries. In Season 1, he defends a poetry professor (John Lithgow) accused of killing his wife. And in Season 2, he takes on a case involving the mayor’s wife (Kristin Chenoweth) charged with murdering her husband.
The series also boasted a talented supporting cast featuring Jayma Mays (Glee), Sherri Shepherd (30 Rock), Steve Boyer, and Amanda Payton. It was a critically acclaimed cult favorite, with an 88% score from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
