NBC has revealed their next live musical

In addition to bringing us the best criminal TV dramas (Law & Order: SVU, anyone), NBC is also known for recreating musicals. Over the years we’ve seen Sound of Music Live, Peter Pan Live, The Wiz Live, Hairspray Live and now the network has revealed their next live musical show — it’s Jesus Christ Superstar!

If you don’t already know, Jesus Christ Superstar was created by musical genius Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tom Rice. It first debuted in 1971 and chronicles the last week of Jesus’ life. The Broadway rock opera starred Jeff Fenholt as Jesus and Ben Vereen as Judas and earned five Tony Awards. With the original musical being so popular, it’s definitely not hard to see why this would be a great move for NBC.

In a statement released by the network on Wednesday, Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment said

“As we continue to expand the profile of our live musicals, we are thrilled to be partnering with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to bring a new live staging of the iconic ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ to NBC. Casting has just begun, but we want to fill out this classic show with as many recording artists as possible to give proper voice to what is the original rock opera score.

Creators Webber and Rice will stick around as executive producers and provide music and lyrics for the show. Additionally, musical vets Marc Platt of La La Land, plus Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are also on board as executive producers. As for who’ll snag the role of Jesus, you’ll just have to wait to find out.

The musical is set to air on Easter Sunday, 2018.
