#NationalFoodDay is trending on Twitter, and here’s what that means

Have you been on Twitter in the last few hours? If so, you may have noticed #NationalFoodDay trending. Perhaps you thought to yourself “every day is National Food Day in my world” and went about your business. After all, they have a holiday for everythingthese days. But National Food Day isn’t just about celebrating delicious food (although we’d certainly be down for a day like that, too).

Food Day is more about awareness than biting into a fluffy slice of cake. So what is it exactly? According to the official website, “Every October 24, thousands of events all around the country bring Americans together to celebrate and enjoy real food and to push for improved food policies.”

The point of the holiday is to educate consumers about healthy foods, promote sustainable agriculture practices, and improve food access in the United States.

Even if it’s new to you, National Food Day has been around for a while. According to National Day Calendar, the Center for Science in the Public Interest started the event back in 2011, so this marks its seventh year.

"The many activities and events spurred by Food Day will help foster a robust dialogue on how to promote better nutrition and health, lessen hunger and increase access to food, enhance opportunities for farm families and rural communities, and conserve natural resources," Senator Tom Harkin said in a statement, when the campaign was first announced.

Of course, to some, it’s still going to be about eating.

But it’s important not to forget the original mission.
