Here’s what Nathan Lee Graham has to say about that foamy latte scene in “Zoolander”
Earth to everyone! Since the sequel premiered on February 12th, we’ve all been living in Zoolander nostalgia. There are several scenes that pretty much every person on this globe knows by heart (“What is this, a center for ants?!”), but perhaps one of the most infamous: The foamy latte scene between Mugatu (Will Ferrell) and Todd (Nathan Lee Graham). And today, over a decade after he got splashed in the face with a foamy latte, Nathan spoke to Gotham about the scene we all know and love.
Nathan said recreating the latte scene was his absolute favorite part of Zoolander 2. “[I]t’s just such a classic,” he said. “We shot the first latte scene about 14 times. The second time around we were older and wiser so we perfected it down to six times.”
In fact, the latte has been on his mind for the past 15 years, really. “I mean, have I been in a Zoolander time warp for the last 15 years, trying to perfect the perfect foamy latte,” he joked.
However, don’t think he’s stuck in the past — working with unbelievable talents like Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been a dream for Nathan. “I’m working with some of the comedic geniuses of our time,” he said. “I mean, Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller. . . this has been amazeballs! And everyone is kind and generous on and off the screen.”
Filming Zoolander 2 in Italy, he told Gotham, was like an “out-of-body experience”:
As for the original’s status as a cult classic, Nathan explained that none of the cast expected it, “not in a million years”:
Foamy lattes, all around. (Well, maybe not *too* foamy.)
