Natalie Portman opened up about her next role as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and we seriously can’t wait

Sure, we love Kate McKinnon’s impression on Saturday Night Live, but something tells us that this one might be a bit more (ahem) tame. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Natalie Portman talked about playing Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her next movie. Between Ginsburg and Jackie Kennedy, Portman is truly making a point to portray legendary women this year.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is our second female justice, and was appointed during the Bill Clinton years of presidency back in 1993. Currently holding the spot at the age of 83, she’s pretty much the definition of an incredible woman. In fact, while the movie hasn’t started filming quite yet, Portman referred to the role in an earlier interview as being “inspiring and intimidating.”

She delved into it a bit more last night, and hearing her chat about it is making us truly look forward to seeing it!

"It focuses on a particular court case in 1971," Portman said. "She was basically fighting for gender equality, but she found a man who had been discriminated against because of his gender, and fought for him in the Supreme Court which was all male justices at the time."

We agree with Kimmel — that’s quite a clever plot.

"It's a great way to look at legal matters," Portman continued.

The movie is currently titled On the Basis of Sex. During that time period in history, Ginsburg was a 38-year-old volunteer attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union — or, as we know them best, the ACLU. There’s a great chance that the movie will strongly feature the Women’s Rights Project, which she started up through the organization.

But what we love most of all? Portman insisted that the film should have a female director.

And, her demands were met — Marielle Heller is currently attached to the project. The fact that she channeled such girl power fills our hearts with such joy.

While we truly can’t wait for this film, at least we can currently watch Portman shine in Jackie, which was released last month.
