How Nasty Gal’s CEO is Supporting Future Lady-Bosses
Sophia Amoruso has come a long way in her 30 years on Earth. From a string of odd jobs and a couple of shoplifting incidents—which she recently detailed in her memoir #GIRLBOSS—Amoruso became a seriously amazing businesswoman, founding online vintage store Nasty Gal as an eBay outpost and expanding it into an Internet fashion empire that pulls in $100 million annually.
Now, Amoruso and her company are on a mission to spread the love to future female entrepreneurs. The GIRLBOSS Foundation, headed up by Amoruso, is doling out grants to young women with non-traditional projects and personal stories.
The Foundation is looking for creative female applicants 18 and over to share their goals as entrepreneurs and get some financial support to further their personal project or budding company. Women can apply with materials—which can include videos or a portfolio or any other out-of-the-box technique—and compete for a grant award from $500 to $15,000.
What kind of woman would want to be a future #GIRLBOSS, you ask? According to Amoruso’s book:
“A #GIRLBOSS is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS, you take control and accept responsibility. You’re a fighter—you know when to throw punches and when to toll with them. Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your own terms. You know where you’re going, but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take life seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process. You’re a badass.”
High five, Sophia, for working to help make more lady badasses. The world will never have enough of them.
