Not OK: A waitress threw a napkin over this breastfeeding mom
While out to eat at a sushi bar last week, Dylan Downing paused to breastfeed her two-month-old son, Mason — but what happened next shocked her completely.
Mason began crying inside the Atami Steak and Sushi Bar in Texas and his mother knew exactly what he needed. “I needed to nurse, he needed to eat, and I just fed him,” Dylan told KHOU 11.
Despite the fact that breastfeeding is legal in Texas anywhere the mother is allowed to be, three male customers complained to an Atami waitress, identified only as Rattana. They told her she was too exposed. It’s a difficult situation to be in, but Rattana reacted by doing something totally unacceptable.
“She got a cloth napkin and placed it over me and my infant,” Downing told KHOU 11. “I ripped it off and said why are you touching me and covering my child.”
The waitress immediately realized her mistake. “She got mad,” Rattana told KHOU 11. “Right away I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I should have asked her first.’”
“Do you want to hear my child scream or do you want to see two seconds of boob?” Dylan said. “How would you like to eat with a cover over your head? . . . It’s just a boob. That’s what they’re created for. It’s legal in Texas; I don’t understand what the big deal is. . . Look away. You can see [breasts] for free on the Internet. I’m just feeding my kid.”
Dylan didn’t give Rattana a tip, posting the receipt on Facebook, where KHOU 11 picked it up.
