Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry against Trump, and the internet blew up
Mark the date on the calendar because it will be noted in history books moving forward. Yesterday evening, September 24th, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. It’s only the fourth time in U.S. history that a president has faced a real threat of being impeached.
“Today I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry,” Pelosi said during her announcement at the Capitol Building, per The New Yorker. “The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law.”
The news marks a heel-turn from Pelosi, who had previously avoided talk of impeachment, though she never closed the door on the possibility, either.
However, as CBS News reports, Trump’s dealings with Ukraine became a “breaking point” for Democrats.
“This week, the President has admitted to asking the President of Ukraine to take actions which would benefit him politically,” Pelosi said, according to CNN. “The actions of the Trump presidency revealed the dishonorable fact of the President’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”
To debrief, here’s the deal with Trump and Ukraine: A whistleblower complaint stated that Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work with Rudy Giuliani to investigate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, according to The Wall Street Journal, which broke the news. Biden could potentially be Trump’s political rival if he’s chosen as the Democratic presidential candidate. Ukraine, meanwhile, is reportedly awaiting $391 million in military aid from the U.S.
On September 25th, the White House responded by releasing the full recording of Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president. According to The New York Times, it seems to confirm that Trump urged Zelensky to open an investigation tied to Biden.
