Watch Paul Rudd and his giant mustache turn evil in the trailer for Netflix’s futuristic movie, “Mute”

Netflix has #blessed us with a trailer for its new movie, Mute, starring Paul Rudd, Alexander Skarsgard, and Justin Theroux, and it looks pretty freaking fantastic, if you ask us.

Netflix’s Mute, which has so many Blade Runner vibes, takes place in Berlin in 2048, and follows a mute bartender named Leo (Skarsgard). When Leo’s girlfriend disappears after a run-in with some shady looking patrons at Leo’s bar, it sets off an epic adventure against a captivating futuristic backdrop. Leo must fight to find his girlfriend while also shaking off two American Army surgeons named Cactus Bill (Rudd) and Duck Teddington (Theroux) who have been hired to kill Leo.

The film has been bit of a passion project for filmmaker Duncan Jones, who you might recognize from his work on Source Code, Moon, and Warcraft. Jones’ passion has always been movies that delve deep into creativity, carry a unique sense of humor, and are visually stunning.

And from the looks of this trailer, he’s definitely captured that in Mute.

Netflix is dipping its toes into more expertly-crafted feature-length films, and by releasing this special effects-heavy, gorgeous-looking movie, it’s doing a great job giving theatrical releases a run for their money.

We’re incredibly fascinated about what this action movie holds for us, especially since the protagonist doesn’t speak.

The Shape of Water also had a mute protagonist, and audiences were blown away by Sally Hawkins’ portrayal of Elisa Esposito. It’ll be interesting to see how Skarsgard will take a performance based on body language and facial expressions and translate that into the action genre — a genre not traditionally known for its subtleties. Of course, from watching the trailer, he already seems to have done a great job of creating an engaging, fully-formed character.

We’re excited to see what Jones has in store for us with Mute — particularly in regard to Skarsgard and Cactus Bill; I mean, what a name, and Rudd gone bad?! We’ve got to know more… So you can bet we’re adding it to our Netflix queues and will be watching when it premieres on February 23rd.
