More Musical Goddesses We Want to See on ‘AHS: Freak Show’

It’s weird to think that the the same guy who created Glee also created American Horror Story. Or is it? Thanks to show-runner Ryan Murphy, both shows have killer soundtracks, and both recruit musical superstars as special guests. Last season, Stevie Nicks made a glorious and witchy appearance on AHS. And now comes the news that legendary singer Patti LaBelle will guest-star on next season’s AHS: Freak Show. 

LaBelle, for the uninitiated, is a Grammy winner, an iconic pop star (she sang the original “Lady Marmalade”) and one of the first African-American singers at the Metropolitan Opera House. So basically, she’s boss. This fall, she’ll play the mother of Gabourey Sidibe’s character, and discover the murderous horrors behind Twisty the clown. Sounds horrifyingly amazing.

You know what else would be amazing? More musical superstars on AHS! We love the idea of the show bringing on more singing celebrities, ala Glee. So in case Ryan Murphy is reading this, we came up with a short list of candidates.

1. Adele

Adele seems wise beyond her years, and she has that I’m-super-classy-but-don’t-mess-with-me, ‘50s starlet look. She’s tough, she’s got a killer voice, and at age 26, she wrote and recorded the theme song for Skyfall, so I feel like she could totally cook something up for AHS.

2. Zooey Deschanel

Since this season’s AHS takes place in the 1950s, She & Him’s gorgeous, doo-wop-y sound would be a perfect match. Plus, Zooey D. knows how to pull off vintage style like no other. I know it may seem weird to see Jess crossover into dark and sinister turf, but our lady is versatile.

3. Cat Power

If you’ve listened to Cat Power’s cover albums like Covers and Jukebox in which she covers musicians like Frank Sinatra and Patsy Cline, you will instantly get why she should make an appearance on 1950’s-era AHS. Chan Marshall is totally from a different time altogether, and we feel like she would strangely fit right in with AHS’s cast.

4. Florence Welch

Florence Welch is truly a mystical, magical, musical force. Although she has a Stevie Nicks vibe, we think she would have a LOT of fun dressing up circus-themed clothes and composing an eerie song or two.

5. Aretha Franklin

Before there was Beyoncé, there was Aretha. Like LaBelle, Franklin is legendary and a total boss lady. If AHS had to be famous for one thing, it would be its wide-range of incredibly strong and powerful women. We think Aretha Franklin would be warmly welcomed by AHS fans.

6. Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey relies on pretty much every single genre there is to create her own sound. In Born to Die and Ultraviolence, you hear the ghosts of Nirvana, Elvis, Nancy Sinatra, and Janis Joplin past, so it only makes sense that she would find inspiration from the haunting circus scene.

7. Lesley Gore

Best known for her ‘60s pop hit, “It’s My Party,” we think Lesley Gore would be a very cool, retro addition to our fave horror show. Gore guest-starred in two Batman episodes on TV in the ‘60s, where she played Pussycat, and she originally sang “You Don’t Own Me,” which was featured in season two of AHS. Webet she would channel this fierceness into a role on AHS.

8. Nancy Sinatra

Nancy Sinatra starred in several musicals, appeared on TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, and recorded songs like “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” and “Bang Bang,” all of which demonstrate what a dynamic and fearless woman she is. Can we see her breaking out into song and dance on Freak Show? Hell to the yes.

9. Solange Knowles

Solange, who is a bit more experimental than her sister, would make an awesome fit for Freak Show. Wickedly stylish, talented, and beautiful, Solange would totally steal the show with her bewitching vocals and lively presence.

10. Sia

Sia, who is pretty much the Goddess of Pop right now, would make an incredible addition to Freak Show, even if she decided to hide her face (as she sometimes is known to do for live performances). In fact—that may actually be thematically fitting for the show.
