Mulan *will* have an Asian love interest, because at least some things are right in this world

We’ve all agreed that 2016 has been a major bummer (or at least, many moments of it). But luckily some things are going right for us, because Mulan *will* have an Asian love interest, despite rumors to the contrary. People (us included, obviously) have been freaking out since it occurred to us that Mulan’s love interest could end up being a white dude (and there’s nothing wrong with white dudes… but, in this case, we really don’t need any more white saviors and everyone in the story of Mulan is Chinese???).

Luckily, though, this isn’t the case.

We were all pumped about the live action Mulan from Disney. Like, it’s about time! But then everyone got all mixed up when an anonymous open letter on Angry Asian Man said Disney bought a script where Mulan’s love interest is a white guy, a “30-something European trader.” Like, ugh, NO.

But Disney clarified things, saving our hearts from being crushed into a million pieces.

Disney told Vulture that this rumor is false. In reality, they’re using the script they bought as little more than a “jumping off point,” with other writers making it, well, Mulan. While we’re at it, we also totally hope at least some of those writers are Chinese, thanks, Disney!!

A source told Vulture, "Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese."
