MTV has dropped the gender specific categories from the VMAs — see the nominations here

Following the success of their movie and TV awards, MTV has dropped gender specific categories from the VMAs, and we’re absolutely loving it.

Earlier this year, MTV announced that for their Movie & TV Awards they would drop the best male and female categories, instead opting to combine the two. Speaking to Vulture about the decision, MTV president Chris McCarthy said the move was representative of the brand’s audience. “This audience actually doesn’t see male-female dividing lines, so we said, ‘Let’s take that down,’” he explained.

What this means, then, is that instead of having a Best Male Video category and Best Female Video category, everyone, regardless of gender, is eligible for the same award. false

The Best Female Video and Best Male Video categories have been amalgamated into the Artist of the Year category. Nominated for this award are Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Lorde.

Indeed, Kendrick Lamar, who released his latest album Damn earlier this year, has picked up eight nominations for the video for “Humble,” including Video of the Year, Best Hip-Hop, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Choreography and Best Direction.

The second artist with the most nominations is Katy Perry, whose three tracks, “Chained to the Rhythm,” “Bon Appetite,” and her Calvin Harris collaboration “Feels,” have all been nominated. Perry, who released her latest album Witness in June, has been nominated for five awards, as has The Weeknd.

For the Best New Artist category, Khalid, Kodak Black, SZA, Young M.A, Julia Michaels, and Noah Cyrus have all been nominated.

The only award that hasn’t been revealed is the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which has previously been won by Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Kanye West, and Beyoncé. There is speculation that Christina Aguilera, who is rumored to be making a musical comeback this year, could be the recipient.
