MTV is bringing back this television staple from our ’90s childhoods
Something pretty amazing is happening for those of us who grew up in the late- ’90s and early ’00s — and it involves an MTV classic. The network is undergoing a comeback, riding on the shoulders of nostalgia. And part of that comeback is MTV’s bringing back Total Request Live.
HOLY CARSON DALY!
The New York Times reported that the president of MTV, Chris McCarthy, is more than ready to witness MTV’s rebirth. In the past five years under parent company Viacom, MTV’s ratings have dropped significantly and all turn-around strategies have failed.
McCarthy is confident that October’s relaunch of TRL, as well as a few other rebooted MTV classics, will shepherd MTV into a renaissance period.
The music industry-themed show in which callers voted on the videos they wanted to see that day gave fame to host Carson Daly, who led the program through most of its 1998 to 2008 run. Daly isn’t currently slated to host the TRL reboot, but instead five new, relatively unknown co-hosts will take charge.
Like the original show, the hosts will lead music video countdowns and conduct celebrity interviews from the new MTV studio currently being built in Times Square.
McCarthy also informed the Times that the network has already seen slight ratings gains since airing MTV’s Fear Factor and Wild ‘n Out reboots. So in theory the new TRL, and the Monday-airing Laguna Beach-style reality show, Siesta Key,should only help MTV’s nostalgic turnaround.
For oh-so-many of us ’90s and early-aught kids, TRL waswhere we first caught wind of some of our most beloved of bands and music videos — from Blink 182, to BSB, to that most epic of Moulin Rouge videos (remember, this was before literally everything ever was readily available on the internet).
Basically, this news gets major upvotes from us.
