The MTV Movie & TV Awards is dropping the best male and female categories and going gender neutral

Let’s have a round of applause: For the first time ever, MTV will be going gender neutral with its movie awards, dropping its best male and female categories.

The move wasn’t the only change to come to the awards show. The network recently announced that TV shows and movies will compete in the same categories, with MTV president Chris McCarthy noting that “we’re living in the golden age of content.” 

“The new ‘MTV Movie & TV Awards’ will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest, funniest and most shared films and TV shows resonating across youth culture,” he said about the awards, which take place on May 7th.

As part of the new awards categories, Emma Watson and Hailee Steinfield are up against the likes of Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy for best actor in a movie, while Millie Bobby Brown and Mandy Moore are up against Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Donald Glover for best actor in a TV show.

Speaking about the decision to drop the gendered categories and to blur the lines between TV and movies, McCarthy told Vulture that it was just how MTV’s demographic engaged with culture.

"This audience actually doesn’t see male-female dividing lines, so we said, ‘Let’s take that down.’ They don’t see lines between theatrical releases and television— they just see it as great content — so let’s take that down,  he said. "And they don’t really care whether it’s scripted, reality or a theatrical release. They just want to celebrate great content.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards, which will be hosted by Pitch Perfect star Adam Devine, have also shaken up the other categories usually associated with the awards, including the infamous “Best Fight” category. Rather, McCarthy explains, the category will be rebranded as “Best Fight Against The System.”

“We’re seeing what’s happening in culture. Young people are rising and forcing change … and we’re seeing a voice of activism that’s just so different and so refreshing. We wanted to support that, and so the idea of a best actual fight almost was an antiquated idea,” he said. “We thought it was much more celebratory to honor the stories and characters that have fought against the system that they thought was oppressing them. It felt more modern and more reflective of the audience and how they see fighting.” false

The move comes after Billions star, Asia Kate Dillon, who neither identifies as male or female, was given the choice by the Emmy organizers as to which category they wanted to be nominated for. Writing a letter to the academy, Dillon noted that it might be time to deconstruct how we consider gendered awards.

“The reason I’m hoping to engage you in a conversation about this is because if the categories of ‘actor’ and ‘actress’ are in fact supposed to represent ‘best performance by a person who identifies as a woman’ and ‘best performance by a person who identifies as a man’ then there is no room for my identity within that award system binary,” they said. “Furthermore, if the categories of ‘actor’ and ‘actress’ are meant to denote assigned sex I ask, respectfully, why is that necessary?”
