Mrs. Maisel has been renewed for Season 3 — which means we can basically kiss Netflix’s Gilmore Girls Season 2 goodbye
It seems Amazon is going to be pretty marvelous for the foreseeable future. Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel hasn’t even been released yet but Amazon has already picked the series up for a THIRD season.
The renewal comes just days after creator Amy Sherman-Palladino joked about getting another season while accepting a Peabody Award for the show’s critically acclaimed first season. According to Variety, she joked, “You’re going to give it to us because we’re bringing home the fancy thing, right?” The upcoming third season will reportedly consist of 10 episodes.
The acclaimed comedy drama series, which has already picked up two Golden Globe awards and is seen as a top Emmys contender, follows the titular Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a 1950s housewife who stumbles into the world of stand-up comedy after her “perfect” marriage — and Upper West Side life — falls apart. The series also stars frequent Sherman-Palladino collaborator Alex Bornstein, Tony Shalhoub, Michael Zegen, and Marin Hinkle.
The first season of Mrs. Maisel found Midge trying her hand at an independent life while secretly navigating the pitfalls of the stand-up comedy world, befriending real-life stand-up comedy icons like Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) and making enemies out of fictional contemporaries like Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch).
The Season 3 pick-up comes just a year after Mrs. Maisel made headlines after being picked up to series with a two-season, 18-episode order.
Like her previously beloved series, Gilmore Girls and Bunheads, Mrs. Maisel is full of Sherman-Palladino’s signature traits, from quick and witty dialogue to packed pop culture references. Additionally, the series also homages to the showrunner’s previous series and includes cameos and appearances from her frequent collaborators including Bailey De Young.
With at least two more seasons of Mrs. Maisel on the way, it means more chances to see more of our favorite Sherman-Palladino collaborators appear on the series — specifically Lauren Graham. According to Sherman-Palladino, the Gilmore Girls star is itching for a guest role and we’re hoping this Season 3 renewal ensures we’ll get to see Graham in her ’50s NYC best for at least one episode.
The 10-episode second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is expected to be released sometime in the fall.
