Oh so THIS is why it took so long for “Gilmore Girls” to introduce Mr. Kim

One of the most hilarious moments of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was in “Spring” when Rory said hi to Lane Kim’s dad. Yet, just because Lane’s father showed up on Gilmore Girls during the revival doesn’t mean we learned anything about why he was missing from the entire original series. Lane actress Keiko Agena had previously stated it might be because he was always traveling. But we FINALLY have the true answer from the creator of Gilmore Girls herself — Amy Sherman-Palladino.

“We didn’t have a dramatic necessity for him,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLine. She continued:

"The dynamic was between Lane and her mother. The show is about mothers and daughters, and this was a different mother and daughter. If we had broken a story and went, 'It would really help to have Mr. Kim here,' we would've done it. But we didn't. That dynamic was very clean between the two of them. And sometimes when you add another person to the mix, it gets muddy."

Sure, we love that Gilmore Girls is all about mothers and daughters. And that dynamic between Lane and her strict mother was certainly entertaining and meaningful enough. But we’re not sure that Sherman-Palladino’s reasoning gives us enough closure about the mysterious Mr. Kim.

We knew Mrs. Kim was married, but wouldn’t you think Lane’s dad would have been in the Kim house or intervening in how his daughter was raised at some point during the original SEVEN SEASONS?

You know, like when his daughter got married or had kids??

However, if we’re being honest, Sherman-Palladino is right in saying his presence wouldn’t have necessarily added anything to the story. It just would have solved an odd plot hole of the series.

So I guess we will just have to accept Sherman-Palladino’s answer — after all, she did create Gilmore Girls. Plus, if we had seen Mr. Kim before, then it wouldn’t have been so damn exciting to see Lane’s dad in A Year in the Life.
