Here’s how to make a DIY pom-pom chair, courtesy of Mr. Kate

It’s no secret we love the unbelievably creative and hilarious Mr. Kate (aka Kate Albrecht). She’s a woman of many talents — lifestyle blogger, designer, YouTube star — and has been a part of the HelloGiggles family since the very beginning. We’ve featured everything from Mr. Kate’s video series “OMG We Bought A House!” to her awesome jewelry line; and now, we’re super excited to spread the word about her new book, A Hot Glue Gun Mess: Funny Stories, Pretty DIY Projects (available here)!

Mr. Kate’s new tome is chock full of hilarious anecdotes and creative homemade projects that are bound to bring out your lurking inner-artist. (Think rad beauty DIYs, quirky homemade jewelry, and, yes, directions on how to make your own “Tom Hanks is my Boyfriend” crushed velvet pillow!)

In celebration of A Hot Glue Gun Mess, Mr. Kate was kind enough to share an awesome DIY project from the book that we already can’t wait to make. Behold: Everything you need to make your own DIY pom-pom chair, courtesy of our girl, Mr. Kate.

PREP IT

Chair with a removable cushion
100-grit sandpaper
Drop cloth
Spray paint, in the color(s) of your choice
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Yarn pom-poms, in the colors and sizes of your choice (this chair took 120 pom-poms)

DO IT!

1. Remove the cushion from your chair. Tip: If there are screws holding the cushion in place, you can usually use a screwdriver to loosen the screws underneath the cushion.

2. Use the sandpaper to sand off any peeling paint or smooth any rough patches on the chair.

3. Spread out a drop cloth outside and spray paint the chair. Tip: You might want to use a spray paint primer first if you’re painting a light color over a dark chair, to make it pop. Let the paint dry, then do more coats as needed to get the color you want.

4. Hot-glue the pom-poms to the cushion, taking care to bunch them close together so that the cushion fabric doesn’t show underneath.

5. Reattach the cushion and take a seat! You deserve a nice rest.

DO IT Elsewhere! Make your own pom-poms using a fork, yarn, and scissors. Wrap yarn 15 to 20 times around the fork and knot a separate piece of yarn tightly around the middle to cinch the bundle. Cut through each outer edge of the wrapped yarn to release it from the fork, then plump your handmade pom-pom!

Mr. Kate’s new book is all kinds of amazing, and features a mix of personal stories with fun and easy beauty, home, and fashion DIYs. A Hot Glue Gun Mess: Funny Stories, Pretty DIY Projects is available now, and you can purchase it right here.
