Movies that make freezing, snowy weather slightly more bearable

It’s that special time of year when you can never wear too many pairs of socks, and it takes 10 minutes to suit up before going outside to get the mail. Snow is beautiful and fun and Instagrammable for all of 30 seconds, and then you’re ready for it to melt. Winter weather is a struggle, guys. Unless you get a snow day.

When you’re an adult, you might get a snow day if work is canceled due to bad road conditions, but chances are you’ll still have to work from home. Luckily, you can create your own snow days on the weekends! Grab a blanket (or three) make some hot chocolate and prepare for a weather-themed movie marathon. To help make the winter a little more bearable, here are some of our favorites to cozy up with this winter.

Cool Runnings

Cool Runnings is textbook snow day material. Love the cold? Loathe the cold? Need a dose of ‘90s nostalgia? Check. Check. Check. Cool Runnings is greatness to all people, and will make you hate the cold a little less.

Frozen

Do you want to build a snowman? If it’s too cold to go outside, you can do the next best thing: Watch Frozen, sing along at the top of your lungs and bemoan for the thousandth time that you aren’t a Disney princess. You know, adult stuff.

Home Alone

Home Alone is on a lot of “best” lists. It’s one of the best Christmas movies ever, it has one of the best sequels ever and it’s one of the best feel-good, watch-anytime movies ever. That trifecta of excellence makes it a prime choice to watch on a snow day. And, you know, get super paranoid about your next door neighbor.

Fargo

Fargo isn’t exactly a feel-good movie, but there is a lot of snow involved—blood-covered snow that will make you appreciate your own snow situation. Fargo is just gloomy enough to match your lazy-day lifestyle of the moment, but keep you on your toes. Hey, it might inspire you to shovel your driveway in hopes of finding an abandoned suitcase filled with cash.

Harry Potter

When you’re really in hibernation mode, the Harry Potter movies are in it for the long haul with you. There are eight—count them, eight—movies to keep you marathoning until the snow melts. (And if not, just start from the beginning.) Plus, there are gratuitous shots of Hogwarts in the snow and Weasley sweaters galore.

The Snow Queen

This 3D animated Russian film (that, incidentally, predates Frozen) is packed with girl-power and heaps of magically animated snow. Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy-tale, it follows two sisters who must battle the Snow Queen—a not-awesome lady who’s covered the world in ice.

Miracle

Sometimes you need a good sports cry. Let it out to Miracle, a fitting choice that matches the weather. You already know what happens, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting.

Groundhog Day

Wake up, put on sweatpants, consider shoveling your driveway/sidewalk, decide against it and eat a package of Oreos for lunch instead, watch all of the movies. Repeat. With snow days come much repetition, and there isn’t a movie more fitting than Groundhog Day.

March of the Penguins

You think penguins get snow days? Think again. Every day is a snow day for these guys. Throw on March of the Penguins and let the waddling commence.

Wet Hot American Summer

It can’t be all snow, all the time. Take a break from the winter at Camp Firewood. If you fill the summer-shaped void in your heart with Wet Hot American Summer, it’ll be June before you know it.
