20 Golden Globe-Nominated Movies You Can Rent or Stream Right Now

On February 28th, 2021, the 78th Golden Globes will be broadcast across the country. Millions of viewers will tune in to watch who will win, who will lose, and who will own the night with their best at-home red carpet attire. But if you plan on watching the 2021 Golden Globes and bet on who will take home a little golden statue, you may want to stop what you’re doing to catch up on all the nominated movies from 2020 and the beginning of this year. While everyone may be familiar with Citizen Kane’s director, star, and co-screenwriter, Orson Welles, director David Fincher created a Netflix original movie about Citizen Kane’s other screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz. The film focuses on Mankiewicz’s development of the infamous screenplay and his relationship with alcohol.

2. The Trial of the Chicago 7

This Aaron Sorkin-directed film focuses on the real-life trial of anti–Vietnam War protesters who were charged with violating the Rap Brown Law, which made it illegal to cross state lines in order to riot in the ’60s. Like any Sorkin screenplay, there’s drama, one-of-a-kind dialogue, and a stellar cast.

3. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman star in Netflix’s film about bisexual blues singer Ma Rainey. The film highlights Ma Rainey and her band during a recording session while battling white management over the control of her music and the events that happen after.

4. The Prom

When a film is about prom, it usually involves a “nerdy” girl who had a makeover in some form or fashion; however, this prom movie (called Prom, of course) is more heartfelt than that. With a stellar cast (Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells), the film follows high schooler Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman) as she tries to go to prom with her girlfriend, but is prevented from going. Next thing you know, Broadway stars hear about her story and come to the rescue.

5. Pieces of a Woman

Vanessa Kirby of The Crown has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her jaw-dropping performance in Pieces of a Woman. The movie focuses on a woman who gives birth in her home, but due to complications, the newborn passes away. The film follows her as she works through grief, family, and life.

6. Hillbilly Elegy

When a young man needs to return to his hometown because of a family incident, he has to face his difficult relationship with his mother who is struggling with addiction. This, in turn, brings memories up of his late grandmother who brought him up, his childhood, and the challenges he has to face head-on. The film stars Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

7. Over the Moon

If there’s one animated movie that will pull on your heartstrings this year, it’s Over the Moon. After losing her mother to a terminal illness, a young girl named Fei Fei decides to build a spaceship to prove to her family and community that the Moon Goddess they know from their culture actually exists.

8. I Care a Lot

If you care a lot about Rosamund Pike, then you’re going to love her in this film. For her Golden Globe-nominated performance, she plays a crooked legal guardian who takes advantage of the elderly to make some cold, hard cash. But things turn sour when she messes with the wrong woman.

1. Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman is a thriller that follows Cassie (Carey Mulligan) as she seeks revenge after she is traumatized by a past life event. While the film focuses on Cassie’s vengeance, it highlights a view of rape culture that often isn’t discussed in Hollywood.

2. One Night in Miami

Regina King does it again. As the director of One Night in Miami, she brings to life a fictional evening in Miami, Florida, that follows Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown, after Ali’s momentous fighting event.

3. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

If you liked Borat, then you’re going to love the sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. It follows Kazakh journalist Borat as he goes back to America during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Hilarity ensues as he rediscovers America with his 15-year-old daughter.

4. Emma

If you’re a Jane Austen and Queen’s Gambit fan, then you’re probably going to love Emma, which stars Golden Globe-nominee Anya Taylor-Joy. The film adaptation of the classic book follows Emma Woodhouse and her romantic adventures and mishaps. It’s a modern take on the beloved story that’s an ultimate must-see.

5. Sound of Metal

Not only are critics raving about Riz Ahmed’s performance, but the movie is getting acclaim as well. It follows a drummer through his journey of accepting the reality that his hearing is deteriorating. From first-time director Darius Marder, this film is unlike anything you have ever seen.

6. Another Round

Want to have a drunken adventure in the comfort of your own home? Watch Around Round. It follows four high school teachers who choose to try out an experiment of consuming alcohol during working hours to see how it affects their lives—and as you can guess, things get crazy.

1. Palm Springs

Palm Springs broke the record for the biggest sale ever at the Sundance Film Festival, and Andy Samberg is now nominated for his second Golden Globe as a Lead Actor for this film. It’s a tale about time, love, and finding joy in a Groundhog Day-like world. It’s hilarious and a must-watch.

2. Nomadland

When a woman loses her job during the 2008 recession, she takes a journey heading west. The based-on-a-book film is nominated for four Golden Globes, including Best Director for Chloé Zhao and Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for Frances McDormand.

Disney Plus

1. Onward

Disney and Pixar do it again with Onward, a tale about two brothers who go on an adventure to bring their late father back to life for one day. It’s heartfelt, funny, and a great watch with your siblings. Make sure to bring your tissues, too.

2. Soul

Two Pixar movies? You heard right. This film is all about what it means to find your purpose and have a life, and it celebrates the complexity of life while showcasing what it means to be Black in today’s world. It’s the perfect movie to play during this time in our lives.

3. Hamilton

It was nearly impossible to get Broadway tickets to Hamilton, but now you can watch the show from the comfort of your own home. Hamilton follows Alexander Hamilton through his life’s journey, from being born in the Caribbean to becoming one of the Founding Fathers of America. The musical is packed with tunes you’ve probably heard before and heartbreaking stories.

HBO Max

Judas and the Black Messiah

While this movie launched on HBO Max on February 12th, you only have 31 days to watch it before it leaves the platform. The biographical drama focuses on an FBI informant (LaKeith Stanfield) who infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party to keep watch on Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya).
