Sad movies are an important element of any self-care routine. A good cry is therapeutic. A good cry allows you to release your pent-up emotions in one dramatic, snotty flow. TMI? No way. Based on the Jonathan Safran Foer novel of the same name, this film is a tearjerker. When young Oskar (Thomas Horn) loses his father (Tom Hanks) in the 9/11 attacks, he searches through the city for a final message.

3The Last 5 Years

This musical-turned-movie musical follows the five-year relationship of Cathy (Anna Kendrick) and Jamie (Jeremy Jordan). The film is told forward from Jamie’s perspective, and backward from Cathy’s in a sequence of interlaced scenes.

4The Little Prince

This animated film tells the tale of a young girl who finds a friend in an old man whose life is full of adventures.

5The Imitation Game

This Oscar-winning film recounts the true story of Alan Turing, a mathematician who works to crack the code of an unbreakable World War II machine.

6Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father

Dear Zachary is a documentary about a small family who suffered great loss over and over again. Zachary’s father is murdered, and his close friend directs this film as a love letter to his surviving son. But things only get worse.

7Boyhood

Directed by Richard Linklater, Boyhood tracks the adolescence of Mason. Captured over 12 years with the same cast, the film is a modern epic about growing up.

8One Day
