What moving somewhere for love can teach you about relationships

In The CW’s new show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a young woman leaves her covetable life in New York City in order to follow her ex — the one that got away — to West Covina, CA. (It’s two hours away from the beach, without traffic.) The show totally speaks to our inner, love-crazy, die-hard romantics, and we can’t wait to tune in to the series premiere on Monday, October 12, at 8/7c on The CW.

Moving somewhere in the name of love is one of the biggest decisions you can make in life, but can also be one of the greatest. Here are just a few lessons you learn after you make that leap.

Love is a two-way street

Moving somewhere for love, while not necessarily a selfless act, is nonetheless a pretty big sacrifice to make. Never forget that you deserve just as much love and devotion from your partner in return.

Your relationship shouldn’t define you

Relationships are pivotal, important parts of everyone’s lives — but a relationship isn’t the only thing that defines who you are. You are your own person, and that’s awesome!

Everyone needs time away from their partner

It seems counterintuitive once you’ve moved somewhere just to be with someone, but every relationship needs breathing room. You exist as a separate entity from your partner, and having your own life outside of your relationship is key to your mental health. Plus, it’ll only make your relationship stronger in the longer run.

All relationships require compromise

As we mentioned before, moving somewhere for love might just be one of the biggest possible decisions you can make — but every relationship requires compromise. Whether you’re deciding where to order take-out from or whether you want to move to Europe, there’s always a happy medium.

You can never guarantee that things are going to work out

Whether or not you make the decision to move somewhere for love, you can never guarantee that a relationship is going to work out. You can be with someone who feels like the love of your life, and things can still fizzle. It’s just a part of life — and that’s totally okay.

Every love deserves a chance to thrive

Long-distance relationships are notoriously difficult, and can often feel like they have little pay-off. Abandoning your life and moving across the country can sometimes feel like a more appealing option than one more day of texts and video chats. If distance is the only thing standing in the way of your love, and “what if”s will plague you for life, there’s nothing wrong with considering a move.

Sometimes, you really can’t live without someone

At the end of the day, the reason we pick up our lives and follow someone around the world is because we can’t imagine a life without them. Finding that kind of love is an amazing thing, and there’s nothing regrettable about that.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend premieres Monday, October 12, at 8/7c on The CW.
