Paramount has issued the greatest “sorry not sorry” statement over “Mother!”
Whether you’ve seen those terrifying trailers or have simply scrolled through Twitter, chances are you know exactly how divisive Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Mother! has been. Unless you’ve actually seen the film, it’s hard to say what Mother! is about, but according to Aronofsky, the gruesome thriller is meant to be an allegory about how humans interact with earth.
Unfortunately, the brutal and horrific nature of the film (which caused star Jennifer Lawrence to require a “Kardashian Tent” to calm down between shoots) has left critics and fans shocked and many outraged, with CinemaScore going so far as to give the film an “F” rating.
But despite the flood of controversy surrounding the film, Paramount is standing by Mother! and it’s director. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the studio’s president of marketing and distribution, Megan Colligan, praised Aronofsky and his “bold” film.
“This movie is very audacious and brave. You are talking about a director at the top of his game and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold, Colligan states. “Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.
While the film may shock and dismay many, many moviegoers, some of whom probably thought they were actually off to see Reese Witherspoon’s new rom-com Home Again (a film about a mother who takes in three younger men and maybe falls in love with one of them), Paramount is joining Jennifer Lawrence in defending the film as one that is rightfully not for everyone.
So there you have it. Filmgoers and critics may decide Mother! is not for them, but Paramount is standing behind Aronofsky and originality.
