America’s “most admired” woman has been announced, and we’re so here for this
Today, December 27th, Gallup released its annual list of America’s most-admired women, and for the first time ever, Michelle Obama nabbed the top spot. Hillary Clinton held the title last year (and for the 15 years before that). Obama, who has been on tour to promote her new memoir, Becoming, earned 15% of the vote—putting her far ahead of the other women on the survey. Former talk show host Oprah Winfrey took second place, with 5% of respondents saying they looked up to her. Clinton, meanwhile, still cracked the top three with 4% of the vote (she tied with First Lady Melania Trump). Other women considered included German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and comedian Ellen DeGeneres.
It’s easy to see why Obama was so adored this year. Between her work educating girls around the world, her bestselling memoir, and her down-to-earth attitude, she remains one of the country’s most accomplished figures. And she’s been high on the list in previous years, too. Gallup notes that she has finished second in the annual poll three times before.
And as for America’s most-admired man? Former president Barack Obama came in first place for the 11th year in a row, with 19% of respondents naming him. President Donald Trump finished second, with 13% of the votes.
