This is officially the most addictive food in the world

What’s the most addictive food in the world? You probably already know the answer. Search, deep down, in your heart of hearts, because really, another way to ask this question is, what’s the best food in the world? What cheesy, saucy goodness can we never say no to? That’s right: Science says that pizza is officially the most addictive food ever. That’s something that everyone with tastebuds can attest to, but now there’s data to back it up.

A study conducted by University of Michigan researchers aimed to figure out which were the most “addictive” foods — that is, foods that caused “loss of control over consumption, continued use despite negative consequences, and an inability to cut down despite the desire to do so.”

The researchers believed that foods like these can actually be linked to the same effects of drugs. “We propose that highly processed foods share pharmacokinetic properties (e.g. concentrated dose, rapid rate of absorption) with drugs of abuse, due to the addition of fat and/or refined carbohydrates and the rapid rate the refined carbohydrates are absorbed into the system,” graduate student Erica Schulte and Dr. Ashley Gearhardt wrote in the report.

After analyzing over 500 survey results, it turns out that pizza is the clincher. However, it’s important to note that this study has some issues. UpRoxx notes that the researchers surveyed college students, who eat more pizza than any other group (many of us can verify that from personal experience, as well), and that it’s a self-reporting study — so it could very well be that the foods we find most addictive are the ones we feel like we’re *supposed* to find addicting.

Or, you can take away the possibility that we kind of have an excuse for the sheer amount of pizza we can eat in one sitting. It’s not our fault it’s addicting.
