Morrissey wrote a novel and we can read it really, really soon
English singer Morrissey (who you probably know as the lead singer of The Smiths) is about to delight us in a totally new way — with his first novel.
Lucky for us, we don’t have to wait long to find out more. The novel, List of the Lost, is set for release in late September by Penguin Books. We’ll get the exact date later this week, along with (hopefully) more deets on the plot.
Unfortunately, we Gigglers on this side of the Atlantic can’t mark our calendars just yet. The U.S. isn’t included on the list of countries where the novel will be first released, so we may have to hold out a bit longer to get our hands on it.
There’s plenty to be excited about in the meantime, though. This isn’t the legendary lyricist’s first foray into longer styles of writing. Just under two years ago, he wrote an aptly-titled Autobiography that had critics raving.
In fact, when Morrissey first revealed he was working on a fiction novel in January 2014, he explained that his writerly ambitions arose because of Autobiography‘s success. “In 2013 I published my Autobiography and it has been more successful than any record I have ever released, so, yes, I am mid-way through my novel,” he told fans in his True to You fan chat. “I have my hopes.”
While the dream of a novel has become reality in the year and a half since then, we still don’t know any more about the plot now than we did then. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make a few (un)educated guesses on the topic.
Morrissey just finished a tour-filled summer promoting 2014’s album World Peace Is None Of Your Business, so maybe the novel will be inspired by his world travels. In a recent Larry King interview, he talked about everything from his health (he is open about dealing with depression and a recent cancer scare), to politics, to a harsh critique of the modern music industry. All of which could make a fascinating basis for List of the Lost.
Or, of course, his novel could go in a totally different direction than anything we’ve seen from him yet. That may be Morrissey at his best — surprising us and delighting us in ways we never could have expected. He’s never been afraid to speak (or write) his mind, so hopefully it won’t be long until he satisfies our curiosity.

Call me morbid, but The Smiths lyrics fit perfectly with Peanuts comics
