Molly Ringwald’s tween daughter is taking after her mom, is the most adorable
Behind every rad Jem stands a rad aunt who helped her get there, right? Teen dream Molly Ringwald (who was our forever crush in movies like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and later The Secret Life of an American Teenager and Rainbow Brite, yes that Rainbow Brite) is playing Jem’s aunt Bailey in the new Jem and the Holograms movie and we’re totally with that casting choice. If she could be our cool aunt, we’d be all over it.
Ringwald sat down with Today today and revealed that her own nearly teenage daughter Mathilda, who is 12 years old, makes a cameo in the film as well – and that Ringwald directed her. Adorable!
“She loves acting,” Ringwald said. “We don’t want her to do it professionally, but we really loved Jon [Chu, director]…and so we did it. I filmed it, I actually directed her in it.”
Ringwald admitted even that brief moment of slipping from mom to director was not super easy. “It’s very daunting to direct your almost-teenage daughter,” Ringwald said. “It might be the only time for the next few years that she’ll listen to me!”
We’re loving this collaboration so much, and it’s making us even MORE excited for Jem and the Holograms than we thought humanly possible. While we’re waiting for the release (the film comes out October 23rd!), let’s all watch the trailer for the millionth time.
