Funny Lady Molly McQueen tells us all about her “Reasons I Don’t Have a Boyfriend”

Being single can lead to some funny situations. We all deserve someone who loves us for us — flaws and all — but the journey to finding those people can be a rocky one. Just ask literally anyone who has ever been single: We’ll put up with a lot in the name of love.

Lucky for us, we aren’t alone in our plight. In their new web series, Reasons I Don’t Have A Boyfriend, Molly McQueen and Caitlin Harris perfectly tackle the ins and outs of modern dating. The series follows “extreme” versions of the duo as they navigate the dating world — and it’s all kinds of hilarious.

Each episode features a tongue-in-cheek reason why the women are single, along with definitive proof that BFFs are pivotal to our well-being. While the show takes things to the extreme (it’s a comedy, after all), it’s definitely filled with moments of truth — and we can’t get enough of it. It’s the perfect reminder that even though dating can be both fun and awful, having an amazing bestie by your side makes the whole thing a lot better.

And because these women are so obviously experts in finding the funny in life, we had to find out more. So, we talked with Molly about her favorite funny women, the best dating advice she’s ever gotten, and what it was like to co-create and co-star in a web series with her BFF.

HG: What inspired you and Caitlin to start the series?

MM: We were always the girls who didn’t have boyfriends. Or if we did, they didn’t last very long. We’d have this running joke where we’d find ourselves in some sort of ridiculous situation and be like, “Well, this could be another reason we don’t have a boyfriend.” There were too many good stories so we decided to write about them and share our embarrassment with the world.

HG: Tell us about the creative process—how you developed the characters and the concept.

MM: We just wanted the episodes to be real. To feel like they were situations that girls would actually find themselves in, especially in the crazy dating world today. The characters are pretty much based on ourselves — just taken to extremes. Caitlin is a bit more laid back, the tomboy of the duo; Molly is a little more put together and high strung. All of the episodes were based off real experiences so it was fun being able to take a step back and laugh at the insane situations we got ourselves into.

HG: In the press release, you mentioned frustration over the lack of comedic roles for women in Hollywood. Why do you think this is still the case?

MM: I think now more than ever there are more comedic roles for women in Hollywood. Mostly because women are writing more of their own content and, let’s face it, women know the intricacies of being a woman better than men do. For us, we’re not yet at the level of Amy Schumer or Lena Dunham, so I think it’s extremely difficult for people in our position to get that chance. That’s why we decided to write the roles we wanted to play. We’re also writing from our own lives so I think that’s why so many girls respond do it. It’s honestly the biggest compliment when another woman tells us she can relate to our show.

HG: Who are some of your favorite funny females?

MM: Ohhhh favorite funny females…. Lucille Ball, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Kaitlin Olson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

HG: While the series is technically about dating, we loved that it’s also about female friendship. What’s it like to work with your BFF on a project?

MM: F–king amazing. Like all BFFs, we have a shorthand. We can communicate a million things with a look. It’s been so much fun showing our relationship on camera and growing even closer doing it. There are a ton of outtakes. Probably too many.

HG: Based on the incredible line, “pretend he hates puppies and get over it,” what’s the best dating advice you’ve ever received?

MM: Ha! That’s tough. I think it would have to be: Don’t Settle. Short and sweet. Do your thing, focus on yourself and if the right guy comes, great, but boys aren’t EVERYTHING. Confidence is the most attractive thing on anyone. You can sniff that out a mile away.
