“Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho booked a major TV role literally hours after her breakout Oscars performance
If you missed this year’s Academy Awards, then you probably know by now that you missed a LOT. Of course, stars strutted the red carpet in fabulous gowns. And there was a VERY dramatic mistake by the Academy with the Best Picture winner. But you also missed some showstopping musical numbers.
But it was the sixteen-year-old star of Moana who brought the house down when she sang “How Far I’ll Go.”
Auli’i Cravalho, star of Moana, sang so beautifully that she immediately landed a role in a new musical TV pilot called Drama High the next morning
The pilot comes from writer and creator Jason Katims, who created fantastic shows like Parenthood and About a Boy. According to Entertainment Weekly, Drama High focuses on high school drama students in a working class neighborhood, who blossom thanks to an inspiring and passionate drama teacher. Auli’i will play Lilette, described as a girl who, “works part-time after school at the local town diner. She is so much more than Vanessa, her single mother, thinks she is. Lilette has big dreams, and joining the drama department is one of them.” And of course, Auli’i will likely have LOTS of opportunities on a show like that to show off her powerhouse voice.
Drama High is based on a book by the same name by Michael Sokolove and inspired by his drama teachers. And without Glee, we’ve been craving another fabulous show featuring talented teens. So we couldn’t be more excited. Jason created the pilot for NBC along with Hamilton producer Jeffrey Sellers.
