MLK’s daughter opened up about her father’s legacy, and what she had to say is *so* important

If there’s anyone we should hear out when it comes to the state of race relations in the U.S., it’s MLK’s daughter. MLK’s daughter, Rev. Bernice King, talked her father’s legacy, and it’s really so, so important.

It may be 2017, but, unfortunately, racism is still alive and well, which is exactly why we need organizations like Black Lives Matter and why we need to hear out important people like King.

King told The Huffington Post in an interview that, honestly, she doesn’t think her father would be proud of the way America has handled race. She explained,

“He would be disappointed that America as a whole did not take heed to some of the things that he encouraged us to do as a nation, which was to wipe out the last vestiges of racism. Daddy taught us through his philosophy of nonviolence, which placed love at the centerpiece, that through that love we can turn enemies into friends, she said. “Through that love, we can create more dignified atmospheres.

She continued, saying its important that people really hear what she’s saying and not just respond with their knee-jerk reactions. She said,

“[We must] recognize that we are not seeking to defeat and destroy people but we are really seeking to defeat injustice that’s trying to keep us all separated and realize our commonality, she said. “That’s what [MLK Day] means to me, that’s what it has always meant to me ― it’s not just a day for me, it’s a lifetime. It’s a lifestyle.

We’re seriously clapping over here. It’s essential that fighting racism be a part of our everyday lives, not something we think about every MLK Day. We can’t afford not to.
