Our latest movie obsession has a trailer (and it’s a ‘Frances Ha’ follow up)
Two summers ago, I went to see Frances Ha alone at the IFC Center in downtown Manhattan. It was a humid and disgusting day, and, like most, I was perfectly happy to fork over $15 in exchange for two hours of air conditioning. But instead, I found something more.
Frances Ha is pretty polarizing amongst my friends, but for me, it was a case of “right time, right place,” and it resonated. (At the time, I was single in New York City and stumbling through a quarter life crisis — but that’s probably where my and Frances’ stories diverge.) The film’s story felt as realistic as it was hopeful, and it was obvious that Noah Baumbach (writer/director) and Greta Gerwig (writer/actress) made a great pair.
And now, the real-life couple are teaming up again for Mistress America: The story of carefree 30-something Brooke (Gerwig) and her soon-to-be-stepsister Tracy (Lola Kirke), a wide-eyed college freshman who’s just arrived in NYC. The two become fast friends, and while Brooke generously ladles life advice on Tracy, she ultimately ends up learning a surprising amount from her younger companion instead. The film debuted at Sundance earlier this year, but the first official trailer was just released today. And unsurprisingly, it looks hilarious.
“She lived exactly how a young woman should live, who wants to spent her youth well,” Tracy says in the trailer — but it’s obvious already that this isn’t always a good thing. (Adulthood, am I right?)
Personally, my favorite part of Frances Ha was the fact that the focus of the film wasn’t on a romantic relationship — a rarity for a film with a female protagonist — and it seems like Mistress America is taking a page from the same book. Gerwig is one of the most prominent indie comic actresses of our time, and we’re looking forward to watching her in all her hilarious glory. Like its predecessor, the film is bound to be a quirky delight, filled with quotable one-liners that will probably circle around Tumblr for the next few years. We can’t wait to see it.
Check out the trailer for yourself below, and Mistress America when it hits theaters August 14.
