The very best mistranslated ‘Harry Potter’ subtitles
Know how sometimes people will joke that things get lost in translation? It’s no joke, and some words that are prime for alterations. A few of those words are: Voldemort, Mudblood, and Hogwarts.
So when it came time to subtitle a Chinese version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets into English, LOTS of words got lost in translation. Some hilarious images have been popping up all over the Internet—much thanks to imgur user yougavemehogwarts—featuring those slanted subtitles from bootleg versions of the movie—and they are hilarious.
For starters, He Who Shall Not Be Named gets a great new nickname. Just maybe don’t call him “Fody” to his face. Also, the word Mudblood is replaced by “melon,” but, like, every time. Those are some fighting words, Malfoy. Hogwarts also gets a new spin, by adding in a ‘z’ to its name. And frankly, we kind of like the addition. And that’s not all. It appears as if the person in charge of subtitles still tried their best, so we’re still going to award ten points to Gryffindor for a good effort — and we’re going to giggle about these for the rest of the day.
