Colleen Ballinger-Evans, AKA Miranda Sings, is going to star in a Netflix series
Good news! Today Netflix gave a straight-to-series order of Haters Back Off, created by and starring Colleen Ballinger-Evans, better known as her YouTube sensation alter ego Miranda Sings: a talentless, tuneless, tone-deaf wannabe superstar.
Haters Back Off will take a closer look at Miranda Sings’ family life. Variety describes describes her as “an incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise who continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous, it’s just no one knows it yet.” Sounds hilarious and just up my alley!
Miranda Sings is famous on YouTube for her self-centered advice and off-key attempts to sing. Ballinger-Evans is one of the original YouTube stars, with her first video dating back to January 2008. She’s since grown the character into a globally touring cabaret act and appeared on Victorious and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld. Her book, cleverly titled Selp-Helf, made it to the the New York Times bestseller list. Her YouTube channel boasts over 5.7 million subscribers, with more than 700 million views.
Netflix’s order marks the first-ever scripted streaming series for a YouTube personality. While other venues have greenlit series for digital stars — E!’s late-night talk show “The Grace Helbig Show,” Hulu’s Freddie Wong docu-series “RocketJump” — Miranda Sings’s is one of the first shows that does not fall into the unscripted genre. Good for you, Ballinger-Evans! This way her talent can reach an even larger audience. We cannot wait to see how the show grows as it makes its way from YouTube to Netflix! Until then, thankfully we can still binge-watch her videos on YouTube.
