This movie is seriously close to dethroning ‘Frozen’ from the record books

I bet you thought the Minions craze had died down. Think again, because those little yellow creatures, who got their start in the Despicable Me movie, are still kicking. After starring in their own film, Minions, they pushed Toy Story 3 out of its place as the second-highest grossing animated film. The only film in their way of the all-time top spot? Frozen. But not for long.

Frozen fever swept the nation (the world) after the movie’s release, and Frozen earned $1.26 billion, securing its position as top dog for over a year now. But until the sequel comes out (if the double features we’re hoping for happen), it can’t expect any more opening weekends to bolster its record.

Minions still has one more opening weekend under its belt before it’s officially done premiering, and, having already grossed $1.08 billion in six months, it doesn’t have much more to go before it displaces the ice queen herself and becomes the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

This news comes after the filmed earned an astounding $20.1 million when it opened in China, pushing its international gross up to $748 million. Fingers crossed that movie-goers in Greece are just as obsessed with these adorable characters as the rest of the world.

I’ll be happy for the minions if they make history, but then again, I’ll also be sad to see Frozen slip from the top. While of course, this doesn’t really mean anything other than numbers on a page, it was nice to know that a story about sisterly love and family bonds was America’s favorite film. But I guess we’ll have to wait until September 24, when Minions has its final premiere, to see who wins the fight of Ice Princess vs. Yellow Blob. No matter what happens, I’m sure there’s room for both of them on your shelf (I know there is on mine).
