The hilarious reason why Mindy texted Aziz after watching his Netflix show
The reviews are in: Aziz Ansari’s new Netflix show Master of None is a smash hit. No topic is off limits for Aziz’s character Dev. In the very first scene of the first episode, he tackles buying the Plan B pill for a date after a one-night stand, and it just gets better from there. No topic is too taboo—including racism.
During your Master of None binge watch, you might remember the episode “Indians on TV” where Dev faces race in the entertainment industry head on. He auditions for a role on a TV show about three friends. The casting director likes both him and another Indian-American actor for the show—but refuses to cast both of them in a show, insisting that there is only room on the show for one of the actors.
There’s a scene in this episode where Dev explains Hollywood’s history of using white actors in brownface makeup to his friend Anush. He cites real life examples, like the lead in the movie Short Circuit 2 and Ashton Kutcher in a Popchips commercial. Anush is astonished, and asks ever-so-seriously, “Is Mindy Kaling real?”
Aziz confirmed that Mindy is real in a Reddit AMA he held with his Master of None co-creator Alan Yang. He even shared some amazing insights about that line, too.
“It was so awesome when Mindy randomly texted me ‘hahahahhaahaha I am real’ … Also Gerrard aka Anush improvised that. Also, everyone in our crew always would yell “PRASHANT!” during any work day after we filmed that scene.”
There you have it. Maybe you were on the fence about it, but now there’s no denying it: Mindy Kaling is confirmed a real person. Also, can we get in on that group text? We bet two hilarious humans like Mindy and Aziz would share seriously best ever emoji banter.
