Does this “Mindy Project” news confirm that Mindy and Danny are ~officially~ over?

Since making the switch from Fox over to Hulu, The Mindy Project has blossomed into one of the best, and smartest, shows on television. It’s magnificent, and a lot of it is due to the fact that the show isn’t afraid to push the envelop in the best ways, and provide some much needed commentary on what it’s like to be a working gal in the big city today.

Halfway through Season 4 – SPOILERS, but seriously, binge the show — Mindy and Danny ended their engagement and went their separate ways. They’re still perfectly fine and cordial to one another, for the sake of their little guy, Leo. Since splitting, Mindy’s totally embraced her single girl status again, and is LIVING HER BEST LIFE.

We haven’t seen much of Danny.

It also looks like we’re going to start seeing a lot LESS of Danny come next season. According to TVLine, Chris Messina is dropping from series regular, to simply a “special guest star.” Adam Pally did the same thing a season ago, when his Peter Prentice departed for Texas. This new billing means that Danny will still show up in the future, like Peter has so far this season, but not on a regular basis.

Mindy Kaling posted a picture of her Messina together on Instagram back in early May, which suggests that Danny shows up at least one more time before the end of the season — probably to take Leo to Italy. But after that, sounds like we won’t be seeing him for a long time.

AND THIS LEADS US TO BELIEVE, that Mindy and Danny are 100% D-O-N-E. Good, because it’s time to really start pulling for Mindy to admit her lingering feelings for Jody, even though we know the two of them will never work. Also the newly introduced Princeton Football coach, Drew, was also pretty cool. Or that guy that Mindy met at a bar, J.J. Basically, Mindy has plenty of choices.

Also Mindy has proven that she is a strong, independent, working woman with an impeccable fashion sense who doesn’t need a dude in her life anyway. Even though it’s okay for us to root for her to ~finally~ find Prince Charming, since she deserves nothing but the best (and the show deserves a million more seasons).
