We’ve been here before, and it still hurts: “Mindy Project” has been canceled again

It’s bad enough when you’re favorite show gets canceled, but it’s even worse when you’re favorite show gets canceled twice.

The Mindy Project first premiered on Fox in 2012, ran for three seasons, and was then canceled. However, there was a silver lining, and Mindy made the jump to Hulu, where she started living her best life. Now, two seasons after that big switch, Mindy Project has been canceled for a second time. Whyyyyyyyyy.

Before you start freaking out too much, she’s not gone just yet. While the show just aired the Season 5 finale (it’s streaming on Hulu right now), Mindy and the rest of her friends will still return for one more season, and then she’s going off into the great television unknown. At least this gives us plenty of time to mentally and emotionally prepare our hearts.

When asked about the decision to end the show, the IRL Mindy, Mindy Kaling, was nothing but upbeat and positive about the end of the show.

"I mean this half-jokingly, but at a certain point it was like, I think she’s dated every man in Manhattan," Mindy quipped to Entertainment Weekly. "Sex and the City lasted for, what, six seasons with 10 episodes each? I don’t know that there’s been a show about a woman trying to find love in New York City that has lasted quite this long. And frankly, there’s no more actors in Hollywood left to date."

Mindy also has a pretty clear vision for the end of the show.

"I want to do something surprising. I want to do something that feels good but also makes you feel like when you leave the character, that she’s learned something in these past six years—for someone who doggedly doesn’t want to learn. She’s actually, unwittingly become kind of better...I wasn’t [working on] The Office the last season as a writer — I was starting this show — so now I have this gift of, I get to finish a series! And it’s really fun! I finally get to do that."

It’s a good thing the Season 5 finale was not the forever finale, because while it wrapped up a lot of things, it left so many more up in the air. Though Mindy has (obviously, this is a spoiler, come on) found happiness with Ben — and they get married??!!???? It’s hard to tell, but those are 100% wedding rings — Mindy’s last look in the episode isn’t all that reassuring. She’s found her happiness right now, but will it last forever?

Bless the TV gods for giving us one more season to find out. And also start stocking up on tissues for when Mindy is over.
